         HEALTH & SAFETY STAND ALONE UNITS

The following Health & Safety Stand Alone Units come from the Health & Safety for People at Work National Standards. These Units are generally delivered during a one-day training course and on return to the workplace the candidate is required to complete a number of assignments which would be supported by an Assessor. On completion of any Unit, the participant receives a certificate of competence from Scottish Qualification Authority.

Course Name
Unit A - Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
Who is it for This Unit is for everyone at work, regardless of position or number of hours worked. This Unit is about making sure that risks to health and safety are not created or ignored.
What does it involve?

A.1 Identify the hazards and evaluate the risks in your workplace
A.2 Reduce the risks to health and safety in your workplace

 

Course Name
Unit B – Monitor procedures to control risks to health and safety
Who is it for This Unit is for people who are nominated to check that health and safety procedures are being followed and to coordinate health and safety procedures in addition to their normal work role, e.g. supervisors, line managers, training and personnel people.
What does it involve?

B.1 Check that health and safety procedures are followed
B.2 Ensure that risks are controlled safely and effectively

 

Course Name
Unit C – Develop procedures to control risks to health and safety
Who is it for This Unit is for people who write health and safety procedures and review their implementation, e.g. line managers, supervisors, safety representatives or employers.
What does it involve?

C.1 Develop procedures for maintaining a healthy and safe workplace
C.2 Review the effectiveness of health and safety procedures in your workplace

 

Course Name
Unit D - Review health and safety procedures in workplaces
Who is it for This Unit is for those who review health and safety in work-places other than their own, e.g. those reviewing other business units in an organisation, TEC/lec staff, training providers, procurement personnel, placement officers, etc.
What does it involve?

D.1 Prepare to undertake a review of health and safety in a workplace
D.2 Carry out a review of workplace health and safety implementation

Unit E - Promote a health and safety culture within the workplace
Who is it for This Unit is for those who review compliance with health and safety procedures in the workplace and who need to develop ways to promote a health and safety culture, e.g. supervisors, line managers and all personnel people.
What does it involve?

E.1 Develop plans to promote a health and safety culture in the workplace
E.2 Implement plans to promote a health and safety culture in the workplace

Unit F - Investigate and evaluate incidents and complaints in the workplace
Who is it for This Unit is for those who investigate health and safety incidents and complaints, e.g. safety representatives, managers, owner-managers, team leaders.
What does it involve?

F.1 Investigate workplace incidents and complaints
F.2 Make recommendations as a result of workplace investigations

Unit G - Conduct an assessment of risks in the workplace
Who is it for

This Unit is a crucial Unit for those undertaking risk assessments, e.g. managers, owner-managers, supervisors, safety representatives.

 

What does it involve?

G.1 Identify hazards in the workplace
G.2 Assess the level of risk and recommend action
G.3 Review your workplace assessment of risks
