          Stewart Milne Timber Systems

Following long term planning and preparation between Stewart Milne Timber Systems and David Brown Training, the implementation of an ambitious programme to assure competence within the manufacturing process has now commenced within the production facility at Westhill.

The programme focuses on the supervisory, manufacturing, warehousing and admin functions within the manufacturing plant.

Planning Phase

The programme was planned out to assure that the various initiatives were integrated. Rather than implement a programme just at operative level, the development of the facilities managers was planned out to coincide and assist with the implementation of the programme.

Development Phase

We developed Training Systems and Procedures covering the entire manufacturing process from goods in to goods out. This includes:Raw material intake > Preparing raw materials > Main component manufacture (Kits) > Joinery and assembly > Storage and collation to dispatch

The Training System includes:

  • Departmental Training Plan
  • Individual Training Plan
  • Coaching Sheets
  • Assessment Manuals

David Brown discusses the use
of the coaching sheets with
some of the supervisors working towards their NEBS Management Introductory Certificate

IMPLEMENTATION -STEP ONE MANAGEMENT

NEBS Management Training was used to involve the supervisors. They received training and support in:

  • Delivering Training
  • Communication in Management
  • Leadership and Motivation
  • Controlling Physical Resources
  • Planning and Controlling work

IMPLEMENTATION - STEP TWO

As part of the NEBS Management Training, supervisors were required to implement the Training Systems within their teams. Here, one of the supervisors is seen using a departmental Coaching Sheet to provide coaching to one of his team.

IMPLEMENTATION - STEP THREE

Individual Assessment in the workplace assures that team members are following workplace procedures. This also provides evidence towards the SVQ!

Here Peter Paton assesses one of the factory team members using a Coaching / Assessment sheet. The assessment is used as evidence towards the SVQ in Perform Manufacturing Operations at Level 2

Jennifer North assesses a yards team member following dispatch procedures using the Coaching Assessment Sheet. The evidence is used towards the SVQ in Distribution & Warehouse Operations at Level 2 .

Jennifer is also responsible for assessing admin personnel for the SVQ in Administration at Level 2
